Thereafter, the glorious Apostle follows {the holy king of the heavens} [= God (= Christ)]; Peter is truly deemed {an adorner of virtues} [HOLY MAN]. He fixed all his affections on {the true king {of the storm-house}} [SKY/HEAVEN > = God (= Christ)]; therefore he became through his deeds the chosen witness of the Godhead’s powers.

Notes: [2] fríður ‘glorious’: Ms. ‘fridr’. Finnur Jónsson (Skj B) prints the form with desyllabified -ur to gain an extra syllable (cf. Note to st. 4/2). Kock (NN §1712C; Skald) instead emends to fríðum, which he takes with helgum hilmi (ll. 1-2): ‘the glorious, holy king’. — [4] mietraz ‘is deemed’: The stem vowel, which is usually short, must be long here to provide aðalhending with Pétr; cf. Sigfús Blöndal 1920-4: mjetra. — [6] kóng ‘king’: Ms. ‘k̄ḡ’. See LP: kongr, a form first attested in C14th. Kock (Skald) prints konung. Cf. Note to st. 23/2. — [7] af ... valdr ‘through ... chosen’: See NN §1720. Finnur Jónsson (Skj B) emends af to at and translates: derfor blev guddommens vidne mægtig til kraftige gærninger ‘therefore the witness of divinity became capable of mighty deeds’ (= ‘responsible for, the cause of’?; cf. Blöndal: valdur 1. vera v. að e-u). But emendation is unnecessary if valdr is taken as the p.p. of velja ‘to choose’. With af gjörðum Kock compares Hhund I 41/5 af firinvercom ‘through wicked deeds’.
