The said couple could seem humble to sick people, fair-counselling in a fatherly fashion, generous to the poor. They became courteous and kind to anyone who is near; their power began to increase greatly from prosperity.

Notes: [1] hjón (n. nom. pl.) ‘couple’: The noun is always used in the pl. in this sense, which accounts for the pl. forms of the verb and adjectives. — [3] fagrráð (n. nom. pl.) ‘fair-counselling’: Fögr (n. nom. or acc. pl.) ‘fair’ (so 713) must stem from the reanalysis of the adj. -ráð (n. nom. sg.) ‘counselling’ as the noun ráð (n. nom. or acc. pl.) ‘counsels’. — [5] hævesk ... hugljúf ‘courteous ... loving’: For the rhyme -æv- : -úf-, see ANG §§240.1, 250. Hævesk ‘courteous’ (earlier hœversk) is a loanword from MLG hövesch ‘courteous’ (see AEW: hœverskr). — [7] vurðu (3rd pers. pl. pret. indic.) ‘became’: Earlier urðu: the reintroduction (by analogy; see ANG §235.1a, Anm. 1.) of the initial consonant is warranted by the alliteration.
