Anon Mv I 5VII
Kari Ellen Gade (ed.) 2007, ‘Anonymous Poems, Máríuvísur I 5’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry on Christian Subjects. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 7. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 682.
Unni ærlig kvinna
auðgætanda mætum
sætt af sinni dóttur;
syndlaust var það yndi.
Enn fyrir ilsku manna
upp smíðaðiz síðan
— angr vann aumlig tunga —
The honest woman loved {the splendid wealth-guardian} [MAN] sweetly because of her daughter; that pleasure was sinless. Yet because of the wickedness of men a rumour was then fabricated about {the silk-prop} [WOMAN]; a wretched tongue caused grief.

Notes: [1] ærlig ‘honest’:
This is a late loanword from MLG ērlik ‘honest, honourable’. — [4] það yndi var syndlaust ‘that pleasure was sinless’: For a Lat. parallel to this cl., which is likely to derive from Guibert de Nogent, see Schottmann (1973, 363). — [8] silkiskorðu ‘the silk-prop [WOMAN]’: Skorða ‘prop’ was a wooden post used to support beached ships.
