Katrina Attwood (ed.) 2007, ‘Anonymous Poems, Gyðingsvísur 9’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry on Christian Subjects. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 7. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 525-6.
‘Seldu mier í veð valdan
veðrbjóðandi, og, góðan
… — þú gull of hreppir —
geira, einn eða fleiri’.
‘Seldu mier í veð einn valdan og góðan … eða fleiri, {{geira veðr}bjóðandi}; þú of hreppir gull’.
‘‘Give me as a pledge one select and good … or more, offerer of the storm of spears [BATTLE > MAN]; you will obtain gold’.’
B is extremely dark and very badly worn, and it is not possible to reconstruct this st. in its entirety. After this point also the ms. disintegrates into tatters. Finnur Jónsson does not attempt to present any of st. 9 in Skj B, and Kock (relying on Skj A’s transcription) is certain only of the opening couplet. This edn reconstructs most of the first helmingr, relying on readings from 399a-bˣ and Rydberg. After fol. 14v, l. 31, although occasional words are legible, further attempts at reconstruction are fruitless. The legible words and letters may be found in the transcription of B in the electronic edn of Gyð.
Text is based on reconstruction from the base text and variant apparatus and may contain alternative spellings and other normalisations not visible in the manuscript text. Transcriptions may not have been checked and should not be cited.
