‘Föstudaginn með frægum Kristi rieð eg fyst að fylgja dróttni várum við tveimur systrum mínum og svá Máría Magdaléna. Er Pilátus dæmdi {son Guðs} til dráps og dauða að vilja lýðs, leiddu Júðar hann og hæddu, hlógu og glödduz; þar með slógu.

‘On Friday [lit. fast-day] next to famous Christ I first decided to follow our Lord with my two sisters and so also Mary Magdalene. When Pilate sentenced {the son of God} [= Christ] to execution and death at the wish of the people, the Jews led him away and mocked him, laughed and rejoiced; in addition, they beat him.

Mar (1871, xvi): þar voro oc þa i hia mér minar kiærozto systr miog grátandi. millum hverra er var Maria Magdalena ‘there were then also next to me my most beloved sisters who wept ardently, among whom was Mary Magdalene’. — [1] með frægum Kristi ‘next to famous Christ’: This prepositional phrase can only be locative (so also Wrightson). Skj B and Skald appear to construe it with the verb fylgja ‘follow’ (l. 4), with dróttni várum ‘our Lord’ (l. 4) in apposition. However, fylgja does not take a prepositional phrase with með (see Fritzner: fylgja). — [2-3] við tveimur systrum mínum ‘with my two sisters’: The Virgin Mary’s two half-sisters, Mary the wife of Alphaeus and Mary the wife of Zebedee.
