text and translation

Sáum skjótliga         skunda at landi
skeiðr vegligar         ok skrautmenni.
Fegnir urðu,         þeir er fyrir váru;
frændr mínir þá         finnaz gerðum.

Sáum vegligar skeiðr ok skrautmenni skunda skjótliga at landi. Þeir urðu fegnir, er váru fyrir; frændr mínir gerðum þá finnaz.

‘We saw magnificent warships and finely equipped men speeding quickly towards land. They who were there first became glad; my kinsmen [and I] then met together.

notes and context

The fire, mentioned in the previous stanza, has attracted the attention of Oddr’s companions out at sea, and they come back to shore, where they all meet up again. — [5-6]: These lines refer to Oddr and Ásmundr and their companions, who were already on the shore. — [7-8]: To obtain a regular line, þá has been taken as part of l. 7 (so Skj B), while Ǫrv 1888 adopts 471’s and 173ˣ’s er and construes it with l. 8. Skald emends þá to tveir (cf. NN §2604A).
