Hennar önd í sælu sanna
sannur leiddi hjálpari manna;
páskadag með sætum sigri
sæta guðs fekk virðing mæta.
Magðaléna meiri frægðir
Máría þiggr af drottni várum
nær og firr en neinn megi skýra;
nafn hennar sie blessað jafnan.
{Sannur hjálpari manna} leiddi hennar önd í sanna sælu; páskadag fekk {sæta guðs} mæta virðing með sætum sigri. Máría Magðaléna þiggr meiri frægðir af várum drottni nær og firr en neinn megi skýra; hennar nafn sie jafnan blessað.
‘The true helper of men [= God (= Christ)] led her soul to true bliss; on Easter Day the woman of God [HOLY WOMAN = Mary Magdalene] got precious honour with a sweet victory. Mary Magdalene receives more fame from our Lord near and far than anyone could explain; may her name always be blessed.’
notes and context
[1-4]: The poet again uses rhetorical colours to embellish the high points of his verse, with the artful repetition of sannr ‘true’ (ll. 1 and 2) and the use of sætum (l. 3) and sæta (l. 4), homonyms but from different roots. Cf. similar word-play in sts 5, 7/1-2, 14/1-4, 16/3-4, 22/5-6, 36 and 44/5-6.
