text and translation

Gekk ek um Gautland         í grimmum hug
sex dægr í samt,         áðr Sæund fyndak.
Lét ek hans liðmenn         hjörvi mæta,
sex ok átta         með sjálfum gram.

Ek gekk um Gautland í grimmum hug sex dægr í samt, áðr fyndak Sæund. Ek lét liðmenn hans mæta hjörvi, sex ok átta með sjálfum gram.

‘I travelled through Götaland in angry mood for six days together before I came upon Sæundr. I caused his company to meet the sword, six and eight together with the chief himself.

notes and context

The first two lines of this stanza are exactly the same as ll. 1-2 of ǪrvOdd Lv 19 (Ǫrv 52), which belongs to Oddr’s mannjafnaðr with Sjólfr and Sigurðr. Ǫrv 52 is found in all mss (cf. Ǫrv 1888, 164-5), and ll. 3-8 of this stanza are obviously a variant of Ǫrv 52/3-8.
