ǪrvOdd Ævdr 51VIII (Ǫrv 121)

Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.) 2017, ‘Ǫrvar-Odds saga 121 (Ǫrvar-Oddr, Ævidrápa 51)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 928.

Ǫrvar-OddrÆvidrápa
505152

Gekk ek um Gautland         í grimmum hug
sex dægr í samt,         áðr Sæund fyndak.
Lét ek hans liðmenn         hjörvi mæta,
sex ok átta         með sjálfum gram.

Ek gekk um Gautland í grimmum hug sex dægr í samt, áðr fyndak Sæund. Ek lét liðmenn hans mæta hjörvi, sex ok átta með sjálfum gram.

I travelled through Götaland in angry mood for six days together before I came upon Sæundr. I caused his company to meet the sword, six and eight together with the chief himself.

Mss: 343a(81r), 471(95v), 173ˣ(63vb-64ra) (Ǫrv)

Readings: [4] fyndak: fynda 471    [5] liðmenn: liða 471, lyði 173ˣ    [6] hjörvi: fjörvi 173ˣ;    mæta: svipta 173ˣ

Editions: Skj AII, 315, Skj BII, 334, Skald II, 179; Ǫrv 1888, 205, Ǫrv 1892, 98, FSGJ 2, 355-6.

Notes: [All]: The first two lines of this stanza are exactly the same as ll. 1-2 of ǪrvOdd Lv 19 (Ǫrv 52), which belongs to Oddr’s mannjafnaðr with Sjólfr and Sigurðr. Ǫrv 52 is found in all mss (cf. Ǫrv 1888, 164-5), and ll. 3-8 of this stanza are obviously a variant of Ǫrv 52/3-8. — [5] liðmenn ‘company’: Skj B and Skald prefer liða ‘men’ of 471; Ǫrv 1888 changes the word order of l. 5 to hans létk liða.
