Skal ek víst ríða ok rönd bera,
Gotna þjóðum gunni at heyja.
Ek skal víst ríða ok bera rönd, at heyja gunni þjóðum Gotna.
‘I shall certainly ride and bear a shield, to wage war with the people of the Goths. ’
notes and context
In spring the Huns gather a vast army and ride to the land of the Goths. Hervǫr Heiðreksdóttir, half-sister of Angantýr and Hlǫðr, sees the approaching forces from the watchtower of her stronghold and has the trumpet blown to raise her army. She instructs her foster-father Ormarr to ride to meet the Huns and challenge them to battle, and Ormarr replies with this half-stanza.
Edd. Min. and Heiðr 1873 make purely conjectural suggestions loosely based on the surrounding prose to create an eight-line stanza. — [3]: ÍF Edd. conjecturally adds bjóða ‘invite, offer’ to the end of the line, but this does not make it metrical. — [4]: The same line occurs in HHund I 52/6 and HHund II 23/3.
