Hannah Burrows (ed.) 2017, ‘Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks 97 (Angantýr Heiðreksson, Lausavísur 4)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 469.
Manni gef ek hverjum margt at þiggja,
annat æðra, en hann á ráði.
Mey gef ek hverjum manni at þiggja;
men spenni ek hverri meyju at hálsi.
Ek gef hverjum manni margt at þiggja, annat æðra, en hann ráði á. Ek gef hverjum manni mey at þiggja; ek spenni men at hálsi hverri meyju.
‘I will give much to every man to receive, other, better than he could acquire; I will give a girl to every man to receive, I will clasp a necklace around the neck of each girl. ’
The stanza follows directly on from the previous one.
[7-8]: Ms. 203ˣ has the words men ‘necklace’ and meyju ‘girl’ reversed (which produces the same meaning), but R715ˣ’s garbled version suggests the order presented here, which has the additional advantages of being metrically better and supported by the pattern of the previous two lines. The emendation is also made by Skj B, Skald, FSGJ and Edd. Min.
Text is based on reconstruction from the base text and variant apparatus and may contain alternative spellings and other normalisations not visible in the manuscript text. Transcriptions may not have been checked and should not be cited.
