Wear has made the folio containing these stanzas difficult to read in 2845; 203ˣ, which is an R-redaction ms. at this point, has therefore also been used selectively.
Hlöðr reið austan, Heiðreks arfi;
kom hann at garði, þar er Gotar byggja,
á Árheima arfs at kveðja;
þar drakk Angantýr erfi Heiðreks *.
Hlöðr reið austan, arfi Heiðreks; hann kom at garði, þar er Gotar byggja, at kveðja arfs á Árheima; þar drakk Angantýr erfi Heiðreks *.
‘Hlǫðr rode from the east, Heiðrekr’s heir; he came to the court where the Goths live, to ask for his inheritance at Árheimar; there Angantýr was drinking Heiðrekr’s wake. ’
Hlǫðr learns of his father’s death, and that his brother Angantýr has gained the kingdom of Reiðgotaland, home of the Goths. With the encouragement of his foster-father and maternal grandfather King Humli, Hlǫðr resolves to ride to claim his inheritance, at first með goðum orðum ‘with good words’. The stanza is introduced: sem hér segir ‘as it says here’.
