Liggr mér und herðum Hjálmars bani;
allr er hann útan eldi sveipinn.
Mey veit ek enga moldar hvergi,
at þann hjör þori í hendr nema.
{Bani Hjálmars} liggr und herðum mér; útan er hann allr sveipinn eldi. Ek veit enga mey hvergi moldar, at þori nema þann hjör í hendr.
‘The slayer of Hjálmarr [= Tyrfingr] lies under my shoulders; on the outside it is all encircled by fire. I know no girl anywhere on earth who would dare to take that sword in her hands. ’
[2]: See Notes to Heiðr 36/8 and 38/7-8. — [3-4]: These lines are also found in Fáfn 42/3-4, there referring to the location on the mountain Hindarfjall on which the valkyrie Sigrdrífa lies in an enchanted sleep until, in Sigrdr, she is awakened by Sigurðr Fáfnisbani. — [4]: See Note to Heiðr 45/6. — [5-6]: Cf., especially in light of 2845’s reading, Gríp 22/1-2 (NK 167): Mann veit ec engi | fyr mold ofan ‘I know no man on the earth [lit. ‘above the earth’, i.e. ‘alive’]’.
