Úlfrauð Útkv 2VIII (Hálf 42)
Hubert Seelow (ed.) 2017, ‘Hálfs saga ok Hálfsrekka 42 (Úlfr inn rauði, Útsteinskviða 2)’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry in fornaldarsögur. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 8. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 338.
Munu þeir efri verða, Úlfs synir:
Oddr ok Örnólfr, Áti inn svarti,
Börkr ok Brynjólfr, Búi, Harðskafi,
Rauðr inn rammi, ef þú reynir til.
Þeir munu efri verða, synir Úlfs: Oddr ok Örnólfr, Áti inn svarti, Börkr ok Brynjólfr, Búi, Harðskafi, Rauðr inn rammi, ef þú reynir til.
They will prevail, Úlfr’s sons: Oddr and Ǫrnólfr, Áti inn svarti (‘the Black’), Bǫrkr and Brynjólfr, Búi, Harðskafi, Rauðr inn rammi (‘the Strong’), if you make an attempt.
Mss: 2845(37v) (Hálf)
Editions: Skj AII, 263, Skj BII, 284, Skald II, 149, FF §40; Hálf 1864, 28, Hálf 1909, 115, FSGJ 2, 120, Hálf 1981, 187-8; Edd. Min. 72.
Context: This stanza is introduced by the words: Úlfr kvað ‘Úlfr
said’.
Notes: [1-2]: Both these lines are irregular metrically, l. 1 being hypermetrical, and l. 2 hypometrical. Previous eds have rearranged them in various ways in order to achieve metrical regularity; Edd. Min., Hálf 1909 and Skj B have Munu Úlfs synir | øfri verða, while Skald has Munu þeir øfri, | Úlfs synir, verða, but this latter is unmetrical. — [8] þú ‘you’: Some eds (Skj B, Skald and Hálf 1909) omit this pron. for metrical reasons.
