text and translation

Far þú eigi svá,         Friðþjófr, heðan,
dýrstr döglinga,         í döprum hug.
Mun ek þér gjafir         þínar launa
víst betr, en þik         um varir sjálfan.

Far þú eigi svá heðan, Friðþjófr, dýrstr döglinga, í döprum hug. Ek mun víst launa þér gjafir þínar betr, en þik sjálfan um varir.

‘Do not go from here in this way, Friðþjófr, most splendid of princes, in a downcast mood. I will reward you for your gifts certainly better than you yourself expect.

notes and context

King Hringr replies immediately to Frið 38 with these words.

The stanza is in both A and B recension mss, with the exception of 109a IIˣ. The metre is fornyrðislag. — [5-6]: With Edd. Min. and Frið 1914 this edn follows the wording of Holm10 VI and 27ˣ rather than that of the B redaction mss, preferred by Frið 1901, Skj B and Skald: þér mun ek gjalda | þínar hnossir ‘I will reward you for your precious objects’ (hnoss is used of the ring Friðþjófr gives Ingibjǫrg in Frið 37/8).
