Þjóðólfr ór HviniPoem about Haraldr hárfagri
123

Nam minnigr         marga speki
af gǫmlum mǫnnum,         sás goll miðlaði.
Vas ástúðigr         ǫllu folki
Upplanda gramr         af ǫrleik sínum.

Minnigr, sás miðlaði goll, nam marga speki af gǫmlum mǫnnum. {Gramr Upplanda} vas ástúðigr ǫllu folki af ǫrleik sínum.

The one with a good memory who shared out gold acquired much wisdom from old men. {The ruler of Opplandene} [NORWEGIAN KING = Haraldr] was beloved of all the people for his munificence.

Editions: Skj AI, 20, Skj BI, 19, Skald I, 12; Fms 10, 178, Fms 12, 224, Flat 1860-8, I, 567 (HarHárf).

Context: As for st. 1.

Notes: [1] minnigr ‘the one with a good memory’: This is understood as a substantival adj., and the reference may be to the virtuous circle in which the ruler is mindful of his duty of generosity, remembering and rewarding loyal service, and in turn receives good advice. Finnur Jónsson (Skj A) suggests instead that the word may be an error for mildingr ‘generous ruler’. — [7] Upplanda ‘of Opplandene’: The mountainous region that lies between Fjordane and Hedmark.
