After the death of Sigurðr ribbungr in July 1226, his men went to Götaland to the lawman Áskell Magnússon and his wife, Kristín, to ask Kristín’s son, Knútr, to become their new leader. With a contingent from Götaland, Knútr returned to Romerike in Norway and was elected king.
