Þat er mjök frægt, er {vörðr grundar}, sæmðr sigri, vildi fara góðu heilli til fundar Svía á {remmiskíðum Randvers}.
‘It is widely known that the guardian of the land [KING], honoured by victory, wished to travel by good fortune to the meeting with the Swedes on the strong skis of Randverr <sea-king> [SHIPS].’
notes and context
In the spring of 1249, Hákon set sail for the Götaälv in Sweden with a splendid fleet to meet with the Swed. king Eiríkr Eiríksson and his jarl, Birgir Magnússon.
[7] Randvers ‘of Randverr <sea-king>’: The form of the last element of this cpd m. pers. n. is difficult (for different spellings, see LP: Randvér). Etymologically, we should have expected -vér with the gen. form -vés (see AEW: vér 2), but all mss (except 42ˣ) have ‘-vers’, which can only be construed as a nom. -verr or -vérr.
