Sturla ÞórðarsonHákonarkviða
234

Hafði Kristr
of konungsefni
huliðshjálm
heilli góðu,
þá er allvalds
ór ófriði
frægðarson
fagnandi kom.

Kristr hafði huliðshjálm of konungsefni góðu heilli, þá er frægðarson allvalds kom fagnandi ór ófriði.

Christ placed a helmet of concealment over the royal heir, by good fortune, when the famous son of the mighty ruler emerged rejoicing from unrest.

Mss: E(140r), F(84vb), 42ˣ(84r), 81a(65va), 8(34r), Flat(164rb) (Hák)

Readings: [1] Hafði: Enn hafði 42ˣ    [2] ‑efni: menni 42ˣ    [3] huliðshjálm: hulins hjálmi 81a

Editions: Skj AII, 109, Skj BII, 119, Skald II, 63; E 1916, 474, F 1871, 390, Hák 1910-86, 297, Hák 1977-82, 4, Flat 1860-8, III, 6.

Context: As st. 2 above.

Notes: [2] konungsefni ‘the royal heir’: Lit. ‘material for kingship’. — [3] huliðshjálm ‘helmet of concealment’: Usually refers to making sby invisible by sorcery (see Fritzner: huliðshjalmr; Fóstbrœðra saga, ÍF 6, 167; ÓTHkr, ÍF 26, 312). — [4] góðu heilli ‘by good fortune’: Cf. sts 25/4 and 34/6. See also ÞjóðA Magnfl 19/1. — [5] allvalds ‘of the mighty ruler’: Hákon’s father, Hákon Sverrisson, ruled Norway from the death of Sverrir (9 March 1202) until his own death on 1 January 1204. Hence his reign only lasted for approximately one-and-a half years, and Sturla’s reference to him as a ‘mighty ruler’ seems somewhat exaggerated. — [7] frægðarson (m. nom. sg.) ‘the famous son’: So all mss. For the loss of the nom. sg. r-ending in this cpd, see ANG §395.1.
