‘Cheerful Hákon commands the name ‘mighty king’ and the freeholders; God grants the firm-ruling prince the earth with glory. The liberal-minded monarch has complete control of the wide land; the ruler of the wind-roof [SKY/HEAVEN > = God] created good luck for the young lord. ’

notes and context

In Ht the stanza illustrates the syntactic variant stælt ‘intercalated, inlaid’ in which ll. 2-3 and 6-7 form syntactically independent statements. Lines 1-8 are given as a full stanza, followed directly by a repetition of ll. 1, 4 (so W, U; ll. 1-2 R, Tˣ) with a brief prose link in W. In FoGT the stanza illustrates a variation of antitheton and the Old Norse term is given as stælt.

The headings are stælt v. háttr ‘intercalated, the fifth verse-form’ (Tˣ) and stælt  (R, U(47r)). — For earlier dróttkvætt poetry containing the syntactic peculiarity stælt, see Ill HarII. Because the embedded main clauses begin in an even line (ll. 2, 6) and also include the following, odd line (ll. 3, 7), there is invariably a violation of word order in these clauses (the finite verbs occur later than syntactic position 2). — [1]: This line is repeated in the subsequent prose of all mss (except U(47r) and W(115)), and it is rendered in W(140) as hakon .v.zh. — [2]: Repeated in the prose of R and Tˣ without variants. — [4]: Repeated in the prose of W(140) and U without variants.
