text and translation

Gótt vas í gamma,        es vér glaðir drukkum,
ok glaðr grams sonr        gekk meðal bekkja.
Vasa þar gamans vant        at gamansdrykkju;
þegn gladdi þegn        þarlands sem hvar.

Vas gótt í gamma, es vér drukkum glaðir, ok {glaðr sonr grams} gekk meðal bekkja. Þar vasa vant gamans at gamansdrykkju; þegn gladdi þegn, þarlands sem hvar.
‘It was good in the hut when we drank, gladdened, and the glad-hearted son of the ruler [= Sigurðr] went between the benches. There was no lack of cheer at the cheerful drinking; retainer gladdened retainer, there as everywhere.

notes and context

According to Hkr, which provides a more detailed context than Mork and Fsk, Sigurðr and twenty of his men spent the winter of 1138-9 in Finnmark, Norway, where they stayed in a cave near Fiskefjorden (Gljúfrafjǫrðr) and received provisions from a nearby farmstead. Sigurðr commissioned two ships from the Saami, and the Saami entertained him and his men in their turf hut.

For Sigurðr’s dealings with the Saami, see also Anon (Hsona) 2. — [8]: Echoes Þstf Stuttdr 3/6.
