R. D. Fulk (ed.) 2017, ‘Óláfr svartaskáld Leggsson, Skúladrápa 1’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 313.

Óláfr svartaskáld LeggssonSkúladrápa1

Skúlas bezt und báli
byrræfrs skǫpuð ævi.

Skúlas skǫpuð bezt ævi und {báli {byrræfrs}}.

To Skúli is appointed the best life under {the flame {of the breeze-roof}} [SKY/HEAVEN > SUN].

Mss: A(1r) (GrammSkáld)

Editions: Skj AII, 85, Skj BII, 96, Skald II, 52; SnE 1848-87, II, 397, III, 165, TGT 1884, 159.

Context: These lines are cited to illustrate skarbrot ‘line-breaking’ or ‘joining-breaking’, whereby a short syllable that can be elided (here (e)s: Skúlas > Skúla es ‘to Skúli is’) is added in the first line.

Notes: [All]: Skúli jarl Bárðarson (1189-1240) ruled Norway as regent until King Hákon Hákonarson (r. 1217-63) came of age. He seized the throne in 1239 and was executed the following year by Hákon’s men (see his Biography in SkP II).
