text and translation

Eigi skaltu hlæja,        ef þú vilt horskr vera,
        at annars óförum;
opt þeir hefnaz,        er hlegnir eru,
        ok gjalda líku líkt.

Skaltu eigi hlæja at annars óförum, ef þú vilt vera horskr; þeir hefnaz opt, er hlegnir eru, ok gjalda líku líkt.

‘You must not laugh at another’s ill-luck, if you want to be wise; they who are laughed at often take revenge and repay like with like.

notes and context

Lat. parallel: (Dist. III, 7) Alterius factum ac dictum ne carpseris umquam, / exemplo simili ne te derideat alter ‘Never criticise the saying or deed of another, lest the other man deride you in similar fashion’. — [4-5]: These ll. are similar to st. 56/4-5. A similar topic is dealt with in st. 121. Cf. also Hávm 132/5-7 (NK, 38): at háði né hlátri | hafðu aldregi | gest né ganganda ‘never hold up to scorn or mockery a guest or a wanderer’ (Larrington 1996, 33).
