text and translation

‘“Trú mér, galti!         Munk heill vesa;
svík ek aldregi         svín í tryggðum.
Fund skulum leggja         ok frið gera;
skaltu einn gera         okkar í millim.”

‘“Trú mér, galti! Munk vesa heill; ek svík aldregi svín í tryggðum. Skulum leggja fund ok gera frið; skaltu einn gera í millim okkar.”

‘‘“Trust me, boar! I will be honourable; I will never deceive the pig in truces. We will set a meeting and devise a safe-conduct; you alone will determine between us two.”

notes and context

Cf. DGB 116, as for II 41. — [1-2]: Kock (NN §2163A; Skald) suggests emendation of trú to hlýð ‘hear’, yielding alliteration with heill. — [7] gera ‘determine’: For this sense of gera see CVC: göra IV; Fritzner: gera 12. In a legal embellishment to Geoffrey’s narrative, Gunnlaugr has the fox deceptively offering the boar sole judgement (sjálfdœmi) in the dispute between them.
