Þá es heilagr maðr fœrði byggð sína, þá mátti hann eigi of flœja fjánda gagnstǫðu, því at inn forni andskoti gekk síðan meirr í berhǫgg við hann í áðr. Þorp heitir Cassinum, þat er stendr í fjalli þar er Norðmenn kalla Montacassin, en þar es þriggja mílna fǫr af jǫfnu til þorpsins, en þar stóð fornt hóf, þat er blótinn var djǫfull sá es kallaðr vas sólar áss, ok vôru þar umbhverfis þeir staðir, es allt þangat til hǫfðu heiðnir menn blótit. En er Benediktus kom þangat, þá braut hann skurðgoðit ok brenndi blótviðu umhverfis ok gǫrði ór hófinu kirkju ok helgaði Martinu. En þar er skurðgoðit hafði staðit, þar lét hann gøra Jóns altari, ok snøri hann til trú réttrar í kenningu sinni ǫllum lýð it næsta, ok hurfu margir til munka atferðar ok gørðusk lærisveinar hans. En in forni fjándi ǫfundi þat ok gekk opt í berhǫgg við hann ok leitaði við at skelfa hann í hræðiligum sjónhverfingum ok ógurligum róðum. En guðs maðr hafði því dýrligra sigr, sem fjándinn gørði honum fleiri þrautir.
