Sveinn konungur, þá er hann hafði sent eftir herinum, þá sendi hann Sigvalda jarl til Vindlands að njósna um ferð Ólafs konungs Tryggvasonar og gildra svo til að fundur þeirra Sveins konungs mætti verða og Ólafs konungs.

Fer þá Sigvaldi jarl leið sína og kom fram á Vindlandi, fór til Jómsborgar og síðan á fund Ólafs konungs Tryggvasonar. Voru þar mikil vináttumál þeirra á milli. Kom jarl sér í hinn mesta kærleik við konung. Ástríður kona jarls, dóttir Búrisláfs konungs, var mikill vin Ólafs konungs og var það mjög af hinum fyrrum tengdum er Ólafur konungur hafði átt Geiru systur hennar.

Sigvaldi jarl var maður vitur og ráðugur. En er hann kom sér í ráðagerð við Ólaf konung þá dvaldi hann mjög ferðina hans austan að sigla og fann til þess mjög ýmsa hluti en lið Ólafs konungs lét geysiilla og voru mennirnir mjög heimfúsir er þeir lágu albúnir en veður byrvæn.

Sigvaldi jarl fékk njósn leynilega af Danmörk að þá var austan kominn her Danakonungs og Eiríkur jarl hafði þá og búinn sinn her og þeir höfðingjarnir mundu þá koma austur undir Vindland og þeir höfðu ákveðið að þeir mundu bíða Ólafs konungs við ey þá er Svöld heitir, svo það að jarl skyldi svo til stilla að þeir mættu þar finna Ólaf konung.
