Sturla gekk í fyrstunni fram frá öðrum mönnum. Hann hafði pansara, skjöld og sverð og stálhúfu. Þorgils mælti við hann hví hann færi svo óvarlega. Sturla svarar: Lát mig... frændi sem auðið má verða eða sér... ganga ekki eftir þeim því að þeir eru... Þorgils hljóp fram til hans og segir að þeir skyldu báðir saman vera. Þessa getur Sturla í Þorgilsdrápu er Þorgils gekk fram fyrir skjöldu og barðist alldjarflega:
