Í þann tíma kom af Íslandi Þórður kakali. Hafði þá áður orðið Haugsnessfundur og þau tíðindi er þar af leiddi. Var þá Gissur í Noregi og settust þeir þar undir konungs dóm. Sögðu þá svo einarðlega fram sín málaefni fyrir konungi að þá greindi ekki á. Þorgils kom þá til fundar við Þórð og var löngum með honum. Og einn dag er þeir drukku í konungsherbergi mælti konungur til Þórðar: Hví lætur þú eigi gera að lýti hans frænda þíns? Hann svarar: Þar þurfum við herra að njóta við þinna ráða en eg vil þar eigi fé til spara ef þér ætlið að að megi gera. Konungur mælti: Það ætla eg að að megi gera og nefndi til lækni þann er Vilhjálmur hét. Var þá leitað að lækninum og urðu þeir kaupsáttir. Gerði hann með konungs ráði að. Sat konungur sjálfur hjá. Þóttust menn það sjá að þetta var mikil þrekraun en Þorgils þoldi það vel. Greri sárið svo að Þorgils varð maður lýtalaus og var nú maður fegri yfirlits en áður. Þórður kakali fékk eigi orlof til Íslands. Dvaldist hann með konungi um hríð þar til er honum var skipuð sýsla. Þorgils var með konungi nokkura vetur og þóttist vera haldinn og kunni því illa.
