The new edition is either unpublished or unavailable. The following is taken from an old edition (Skj where relevant):

Sá atburður gerðist þar að eina nótt varð þar eldur laus í bænum. Var þá blásið um allan bæinn. Og er þetta herboð kom í konungs herbergi klæddist hann nú sjálfur skjótt og hét á þá menn er hjá honum voru. Hann lét blása út allri hirðinni og öllum bæjarlýðnum til þessa ófriðar og vopnuðust menn sem til bardaga og skipaði konungur hirð sinni þar sem honum þótti mest þurfa. Bað konungur menn fara varlega og þó djarflega. Var eldsgangurinn svo ákaflega mikill að ólíklegt þótti að slökkt mundi verða. Var þá margs í leitað, borið í vatn og sjór og brotin víða herbergi. Konungur kvað á hvar Þorgils skyldi standa en hann vildi fram ganga miklu lengra. Fékk hann svo mikinn háska við það að það þótti með ólíkindum er hann hélt lífi meiðingarlaust. Um síðir lét konungur taka langskipssegl og gera alvott og bera að eldinum. Varð það þá um síðir að eldurinn slokknaði með guðs miskunn og hamingju konungs. En Þorgils fékk þann orðróm af konungi sjálfum og öllum öðrum er vissu að engi maður hefði þar jafnvel borið sig og borgist sem hann í jafnmiklum háska svo sem Sturla Þórðarson hefir kveðið í erfidrápu þeirri er hann orti um Þorgils. Og þessa naut Þorgils jafnan síðan hjá konungi svo að hann þoldi honum betur en flestum öðrum jafnar tilgerðir. Næsta dag eftir brennuna kom Þorgils í herbergi drottningar. Tók hún honum vel og þakkaði honum hvað drengilega hann hefði gefist um nóttina. Og er hún sér að klæði hans eru brunnin þá gaf hún honum vel sex alnar af skarlati. Hann þakkaði henni þetta. Fékk Þorgils af þessu mikla sæmd sem þar er kveðið um:
