Um veturinn eftir geisladag stefndu Þorvaldssynir þeim mönnum til sín er þeim þóttu röskvastir og fóru vestan með fimm tigu manna, fyrst til Steingrímsfjarðar en þaðan til Kollafjarðar og svo til Bitru. Að Brunngili bjó Svartur Narfason og Bóthildur Heinreksdóttir systir Þórðar er þar var í för. Þeir höfðu það orð á að þeir mundu fara til Hrútafjarðar og svo suður til móts við Snorra. Þar tóku þeir til leiðsagnar þann mann er Klakk-Álfur hét. Þeir fóru Gaflfellsheiði og svo til Laxárdals og komu til Hamra og tóku þar menn alla og gættu en gerðu elda stóra og þurrkuðu sig. Þeir bjuggu þar logbranda marga og höfðu þá með sér. Þeir fóru þaðan á öndverða nótt og bundu þar menn alla nema Guðmund Þorgilsson bróður Helga læknis er þar bjó. Hann höfðu þeir með sér. Þeir fóru á háls hjá Dönustöðum og svo ofan með hálsi að Þverdal og ofan að auðnatúni því er að Einarsteigi heitir við Þvergil upp frá Kaldakinn. Þann dag áður sendi sú kona er Rakel hét, kona Más kumbalda, frá Gnúpi Sturlu orð að hann skyldi eigi heima vera og sagði að ófriðarfylgjur voru komnar í héraðið. Sturla reið heiman um daginn norður til Miðfjarðar og ætlaði að sætta Þorstein Hjálmsson og Brand Jónsson.
