Tarrin Wills and Stefanie Gropper (eds) 2007, ‘Anonymous Poems, Hugsvinnsmál 78’ in Margaret Clunies Ross (ed.), Poetry on Christian Subjects. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 7. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 407-8.
Búinn við meinum skal bragna hverr,
þótt gangi at óskum alt;
sterklig stríð, trú ek, standaz megi
hverr, er þeira bíðr búinn.
Hverr bragna skal búinn við meinum, þótt alt gangi at óskum; ek trú hverr megi standaz sterklig stríð, er þeira bíðr búinn.
Every man must be prepared for misfortunes, although everything goes as wished; I believe everyone can endure serious calamities who waits prepared for them.
Mss: 1199ˣ(73v), 624(144)
Readings: [2] skal: skyldi 624; hverr: so 624, om. 1199ˣ [4] sterklig: sterkligri 624 [5] trú: hyggz 624; ek: er 624; megi: ‘meg[...]’ 1199ˣ, mega 624 [6] hverr: hverr maðr 624; er: so 624, om. 1199ˣ

Notes: [All]: Lat. parallel: (Dist. II, 24) Prospice qui veniant casus: hos esse ferendos; / nam levius laedit quidquid praevidimus ante ‘Foresee events that come to pass; they are to be endured; for whatever we have previously forseen wounds us more lightly’. — [2]: The phrasing of this l. is reminiscent of Sól 25/6. — [6] megi ‘can’: Emendation of the verb is required here for it to agree with hverr. It is possible that the illegible letter in 1199ˣ is ‘i’. Emendation to hvern ‘everyone’ (so Skj B) is also possible, creating an acc. and inf. construction.
