‘The wise mighty ruler ordered all users of the glowing street of the snake [GOLD > GENEROUS MEN] to keep the truces carefully for six nights and to protect the peace.’
notes and context
Hákon’s journey to Denmark in the summer of 1257 and his attempt to reach an agreement with King Kristófór I Valdimarsson of Denmark (r. 1252-9). The initial negotiations were difficult, and some people urged Hákon to harry in Denmark. However, Hákon had promised six nights of truce before launching an attack.
