Sæmundur sendi bréf í mót og mælti svo: Páli biskupi sendir kveðju Sæmundur guðs og sína. Veistu bróðir að Guðmundur biskupsefni hefir ekki mikill vin verið í málum vorum Sigurðar. En þó er hann mjög leyfður af mönnum og líklegt að því muni kosningur undir hann fallinn að það mun guðs vilji vera. Spyr eg að hann mun fyrir mart vel til fallinn, bæði gæsku sinnar og siðvendi og hreinlífis er mestu varðar. En ef nokkvað er annað í þá takið þér vanda af Norðlendingum að þeir ábyrgist sjálfir kjör sitt. En það er mitt ráð, kjós hann heldur til en frá því að eigi er víst hver líklegri er til að guði líki en sjá og er vænu best að hætta. Óráðið að sá finnist að ekki megi að finna. Einhlítir gerðust Norðlendingar að um kjör sitt. Beri þeir nú ábyrgð fyrir hve verður.
