Þá er menn komu heim af þingi hitti Sturla Böðvar Barkarson og kveðst vilja kaupa land að honum og kveðst þar helst hug til fellt. Böðvar gerði kosti á því og sömdu þeir það með sér. Eftir þetta gerði Sturla bú í Hvammi, það er hann hélt til elli, en Böðvar fór þá í Sælingsdalstungu. Og í þann tíma fór Þorgils Oddason norður til Þingeyra en synir hans tóku við búi á Staðarhóli og goðorði. Og um veturinn eftir var sótt mikil. Þá andaðist Oddi Þorgilsson og þótti það mikill mannskaði því að hann var vitur maður og manna snjallastur í máli. Hann andaðist barnlaus. Þá andaðist og Álfdís systir hans og sama vor andaðist Þorgils faðir þeirra. Einar tók þá fé sitt og goðorð og gerðist hann höfðingi því að margar stoðar runnu undir hann, frændur og mágar og vinir, er Þorgils faðir hans hafði fengið sér. Hann skorti og eigi kapp né áræði. Engi var hann lagamaður og blestur í máli. Frá því er sagt að Vermundur hinn auðgi andaðist en Þorbjörn son hans tók arf eftir hann. Hann var kvennamaður mikill og átti mart barna og flest lítt að þroska. Hann átti Helgu Þórólfsdóttur. Ólafur hét son þeirra og var prestur.
