text and translation

Fengins fjár        neyttu framarliga,
        ok vert þíns mildr matar;
aura njóta        láttu auma fira,
        ef geraz þarfir þess.

Neyttu framarliga fengins fjár, ok vert mildr matar þíns; láttu auma fira njóta aura, ef geraz þarfir þess.

‘Use valiantly the property you gained, and be generous with your food; let poor men have benefit of money if it becomes necessary.

notes and context

Lat. parallel: (Dist. II, 5) Fac sumptum propere, cum res desiderat ipsa: / dandum etenim est aliquid, cum tempus postulat aut res ‘Give goods quickly when the situation demands; a thing is to be given when the time or the situation demands’. — [4-6]: Cf. Hávm 40 (NK, 23): Fiár síns, | er fengit hefr, | scylit maðr þǫrf þola; | opt sparir leiðom, | þatz hefir liúfom hugat, | mart gengr verr, enn varir ‘On account of the property which he has amassed / a man shouldn’t suffer need; / often what was meant for the lovable is saved for the hateful, / much goes worse than is expected’ (Larrington 1996, 19). — [4-6]: Lines 4-5 are the basically same as st. 54/1-2 in 1199ˣ and are probably the result of scribal error. These ll. in both mss have no parallel in the Lat. text.
