It is unfortunate that no ms. supports the emendation to sjau in l. 1, although most eds and translators have followed Bishop Finnur Jónsson and adopted it (Finnur Jónsson 1772-8, II, 430; Baumgartner 1884, 62; Skj; Meissner 1922, 26; Skald; Guðbrandur Jónsson 1951, 119 and 174; Lange 1958b, 68; Einar Bragi 1961; Boucher 1985, 1-19; Gunnar Finnbogason 1988, 81; Taillé 1989, 136; Jón Torfason and Kristján Eiríksson 2000, 476).
