Haraldur hinn hárfagri son Hálfdanar svarta var þá
einvaldskonungur yfir Noregi er saga þessi gerðist. Hann tók
ungur konungdóm. Haraldur var allra manna vitrastur og vel
búinn að íþróttum öllum þeim er konunglegri tign byrjaði.
Konungur hafði marga hirð um sig og valdi þar til ágæta menn
þá sem reyndir voru að harðfengi og mörgum frægðarverkum. Og
sem konungur girntist að hafa með sér hið besta mannval, svo
voru þeir og betur haldnir en nokkurir menn aðrir í því landi
því að konungur sparði hvorki við þá fé né fullting ef þeir
kunnu til að gæta. En eigi var hitt þó með minna móti að þeim
þreifst öngum er í móti gerðu hans vilja. Sumir urðu
landflæmdir en sumir drepnir. Kastaði konungur þá sinni eign
á allt það er þeir áttu eftir en margir mikils háttar menn
flýðu úr Noregi og þoldu eigi álögur konungs, þeir sem voru
af stórum ættum, og vildu heldur fyrirláta óðul sín og
frændur og vini en liggja undir þrælkan og ánauðaroki konungs
og leituðu mjög til ýmissa landa.

Um hans daga byggðist mjög Ísland því að þangað leituðu
margir þeir sem eigi þoldu ríki Haralds konungs.
