Að miðju sumri eða litlu síðar fæddi Oddný barn. Það var
sveinbarn svo mikið að menn þóttust ekki barn meira nýfætt
séð hafa. Þorkatli var sagt að systir hans var léttari orðin
að því barni er ætti við henni Ívar ljómi. En er Þorkell
heyrði það varð hann æsilega reiður og sagði að út skyldi
bera en það var þá lög í þann tíma að út skyldi bera óríkra
manna börn ef vildi og þótti þó eigi vel gert. Þorkell lét
kalla Freystein þræl og bað hann tortíma sveininum en hann
taldist undan þar til er Þorkell sagði á reiði sína.



Þá var Geitir faðir Þorkels vistum með Þorkatli syni sínum.
Hann talaði um að sveininn skyldi eigi út bera, sagði sér svo
hug um segja að sá sveinn mundi ekki lítill fyrir sér verða
ef hann næði lífi að halda.



Þorkell var svo æfur að hann vildi ekki á það heyra og kvað
eigi annað skyldu en pilturinn væri út borinn.



Nú gekk Freysteinn, þó nauðigur færi, til Oddnýjar og tók upp
sveininn og gekk út með og til skógar. Hann vafði piltinn í
einum dúk og lagði flikkissneið í munninn. Hann gerði skjól
undir viðarrótum og lét þar koma í barnið og bjó vel um og
gekk svo frá, fór heim síðan og sagði bónda að hann hefði
fyrir séð barninu. Bóndi lét vel yfir og var nú kyrrt um
hríð.
