ok ertu fáskrúðigr at fé,
jóðum þínum kenn þú íþróttir,
þær er þeim fæzlu fái.

‘If you come to have an heir and you are poor in possessions, teach your children the skills which may provide them with food.’

Lat. parallel: (Dist. I, 28) Cum tibi sint nati nec opes, tunc artibus illos / instrue, quo possint inopem defendere vitam ‘When you have sons rather than riches, then instruct them in the arts, by means of which they may be able to maintain a life without riches’. Dist. I, 27 (Noli homines blando nimium sermone probare; / fistula dulce canit, volucrem dum decipit auceps ‘Do not approve too much of men with flattering speech; the pipe sings sweetly, when the fowler deceives the bird’) is not translated in Hsv.
