sem drengmanni dugir;
aura þinna skaltu eigi til ónýts hafa,
þótt þú þik vel auðgan vitir.
Skaltu afla aura á alla vegu, sem drengmanni dugir; skaltu eigi hafa aura þinna til ónýts, þótt þú vitir þik vel auðgan.
‘You must acquire money in all ways which befit an independent man; you must not use your money for something useless, although you know yourself [to be] very wealthy.’

Lat. parallel: (Dist. I, 24) Ne tibi quid desit, quaesitis utere parce, / utque quod est serves, semper deesse putato ‘So that you will not be lacking anything, keep from using up what you have gained, and, so that you may keep what you have, always pretend to be without it’. The phrasing is paralleled in Hsv 57.
