Þá fór Ólafur konungur og fjöldi bónda með honum út til
Niðarhólms og hafði með sér höfuð Hákonar jarls og Karks. Sá
hólmur var þá hafður til þess að drepa þar þjófa og illmenni
og stóð þar gálgi og lét hann þar til bera höfuð Hákonar
jarls og Karks. Gekk þá til allur herinn og æpti upp og
grýtti þar að og mæltu að þar skyldi níðingur fara með öðrum
níðingum. Síðan láta þeir fara upp í Gaulardal og taka þar
búkinn og drógu í brott og brenndu. Varð hér svo mikill
máttur að fjandskap þessum er Þrændir gerðu til Hákonar jarls
að engi maður mátti nefna hann annan veg en jarl hinn illa.
Var þetta kall haft lengi síðan.



En hitt er satt að segja frá Hákoni jarli að hann hafði marga
hluti til þess að vera höfðingi, fyrst kynkvíslir stórar, þar
með speki og kænleik að fara með ríkdóminum, röskleik í
orustum og þar með hamingjuna að vega sigurinn og drepa
fjandmennina.



Svo segir Þorleifur Rauðfeldarson:



Hákon, vitum hvergi,

hafist hefir runnr af gunni,

fremra jarl und ferli,

fólk-Ránar, þér mána.

Þú hefir öðlinga Óðni,

etr hrafn af ná getnum,

vera máttu af því, vísi,

víðlendr, níu senda.


Manna örvastur var Hákon jarl en hina mestu óhamingju bar
slíkur höfðingi til dánardægurs síns. En það bar mest til, er
svo varð, að þá var sú tíð komin að fyrirdæmast skyldi
blótskapurinn og blótmennirnir en í stað kom heilög trúa og
réttir siðir.
