Einar þambarskelfir og Kálfur Árnason áttu þann vetur stefnur sín í milli og ráðagerð og hittust í Kaupangi. Þá kom þar til Kálfs Árnasonar sendimaður Knúts konungs og bar honum orðsending Knúts konungs til þess að Kálfur skyldi senda honum þrennar tylftir öxa og láta vanda mjög.

Kálfur svarar: "Engar mun eg öxar senda Knúti konungi. Seg honum að eg skal fá öxar Sveini syni hans svo að honum skal eigi þykja skorta."
