Ólafur konungur féll miðvikudag fjórða Kalendas Augustimánaðar. Það var nær miðjum degi er þeir fundust en fyrir miðmunda hófst orustan en konungur féll fyrir nón en myrkrið hélst frá miðmunda til nóns.


Sighvatur skáld segir svo frá lyktum orustu:



Hörð er, síðs hermenn firrðu,
hlíf raufst fyr gram, lífi,
auðn að Engla stríði,
ómjúk, konung sjúkan.
Ör brá Ólafs fjörvi
öld, þar er her klauf skjöldu,
fólks, odda gekk fylkir
fund, en Dagr hélt undan.

Og enn kvað hann þetta:



Áðr vita eigi meiðar
ógnar skers né hersa,
þjóð réð þengils dauða,
þann styrk búandmanna,
er slíkan gram sóknum
sárelds viðir felldu,
mörg lá dýr í dreyra
drótt, sem Ólafr þótti.

Bændur rændu ekki valinn og varð þegar eftir orustu heldur svo að hræðslu sló á marga þá er móti konungi höfðu verið en þó héldu þeir illviljanum og dæmdu það sín á millum að allir þeir menn er með konungi höfðu fallið skyldu hafa engan þann umbúning eða gröft sem góðum mönnum sómdi og kölluðu þá alla ránsmenn og útlaga. En þeir menn er ríkir voru og þar áttu frændur í valnum gáfu ekki því gaum, fluttu þeir sína frændur til kirkna og veittu umbúnað.
