En er Ólafur konungur hafði fylkt liði sínu þá voru bændur enn hvergi nær komnir. Þá mælti konungur að liðið skyldi niður setjast og hvíla sig. Settist konungur þá sjálfur niður og allt lið hans og sátu rúmt. Hann hallaðist og lagði höfuðið í kné Finni Árnasyni. Þá rann á hann svefn og var það um hríð. Þá sáu þeir her bónda og sótti þá liðið til móts við þá og höfðu upp sett merki sín og var það hinn mesti múgur manns. Þá vakti Finnur konung og segir honum að bændur sóttu þá til þeirra.

En er konungur vaknaði mælti hann: "Hví vaktir þú mig Finnur og lést mig eigi njóta draums míns?"

Finnur svarar: "Ekki mundi þig það dreyma að eigi mundi skyldara að vaka og búast við hernum er að oss fer. Eða sérð þú eigi hvar nú er kominn bóndamúgurinn?"

Konungur svarar: "Ekki eru þeir enn svo nær oss að eigi væri betur að eg hefði sofið."

Þá mælti Finnur: "Hvað dreymdi þig konungur þess er þér þykir svo mikil missa í er þú vaknaðir eigi sjálfur?"

Þá segir konungur draum sinn að hann þóttist sjá stiga hávan og ganga þar eftir í loft upp svo langt að himininn opnaði og þangað var stiginn til. "Var eg þá," segir hann, "kominn í efsta stig er þú vaktir mig."

Finnur svarar: "Ekki þykir mér draumur sjá svo góður sem þér mun þykja. Ætla eg þetta munu vera fyrir feigð þinni ef það er nokkuð annað en svefnórar einar er fyrir þig bar."
