Höfðingjar í Noregi héldu njósnum austur til Svíþjóðar og suður til Danmerkur ef Ólafur konungur kæmi austan úr Garðaríki. Fengu þeir þegar spurt, svo sem menn fengu skjótast farið, er Ólafur konungur var kominn til Svíþjóðar.


En þegar er það var sannspurt þá fór herboð um land allt. Var stefnt út almenning að liði. Kom þá her saman. En þeir lendir menn, er voru af Ögðum og Rogalandi og Hörðalandi, þá skiptust þeir við, sneru sumir norður en sumir austur og þótti hvartveggja lið fyrir þurfa. Sneru austur synir Erlings af Jaðri og allt lið það er austur var frá þeim og voru þeir höfðingjar fyrir því liði, en norður snerist Áslákur af Finneyju og Erlendur úr Gerði og þeir lendir menn er norður voru frá þeim. Þessir er nú eru nefndir voru allir eiðsvarar Knúts konungs til þess að taka Ólaf konung af lífi ef þeim gæfi færi á því.
