Sá atburður varð á einum sunnudegi að Ólafur konungur sat í hásæti sínu yfir borðum og hafði svo fasta áhyggju að hann gáði eigi stundanna. Hann hafði í hendi kníf og hélt á tannar og renndi þar af spánu nokkura.

Skutilsveinn stóð fyrir honum og hélt borðkeri. Hann sá hvað konungur gerði og skildi það að hann sjálfur hugði að öðru. Hann mælti: "Mánadagur er á morgun drottinn."

Konungur leit til hans er hann heyrði þetta og kom þá í hug hvað hann hafði gert. Síðan bað konungur færa sér kertisljós. Hann sópaði spánunum öllum í hönd sér, þeim er hann hafði telgt. Þá brá hann þar í loginu og lét brenna spánuna í lófa sér og mátti þaðan af marka að hann mundi fast halda lög og boðorð og vilja eigi yfir ganga það er hann vissi réttast.
