Hákon jarl fór það sumar úr landi og vestur til Englands en er hann kom þar þá fagnar Knútur konungur honum vel. Jarlinn átti festarmey þar á Englandi og fór hann þess ráðs að vitja og ætlaði brullaup sitt að gera í Noregi en aflaði til á Englandi þeirra fanga er honum þóttu torfengst í Noregi. Bjóst jarl um haustið til heimferðar og varð heldur síðbúinn. Sigldi hann í haf þá er hann var búinn.

En frá ferð hans er það að segja að skip það týndist og kom engi maður af. En það er sumra manna sögn að skipið hafi séð verið norður fyrir Katanesi að aftni dags í stormi miklum og stóð veðrið út á Péttlandsfjörð. Segja þeir svo er slíku vilja fylgja að skipið muni hafa rekið í svelginn. En hitt vita menn með sannindum að Hákon jarl týndist í hafi og ekki kom til landa það er á skipi því var.

Það sama haust sögðu kaupmenn þau tíðindi svo borin um land að menn hugðu að jarl væri týndur. En hitt vissu allir að hann kom eigi á því hausti til Noregs og land var þá höfðingjalaust.
