Knútur konungur hafði þá lagt land allt undir sig í Noregi. Þá átti hann þing fjölmennt bæði af sínu liði og landsmönnum. Þá lýsti Knútur konungur yfir því að hann vill gefa Hákoni jarli frænda sínum að yfirsókn land það allt er hann hafði unnið í ferð þeirri. Það fylgdi því að hann leiddi í hásæti hjá sér Hörða-Knút son sinn og gaf honum konungsnafn og þar með Danaveldi.

Knútur konungur tók gíslar af öllum lendum mönnum og stórbóndum, tók sonu þeirra eða bræður eða aðra náfrændur eða þá menn er þeim voru kærstir og honum þóttu best til fallnir. Festi konungur svo trúnað manna við sig sem nú er sagt.

Þegar er Hákon jarl hafði tekið við ríki í Noregi þá réðst til lags við hann Einar þambarskelfir mágur hans. Tók hann þá upp veislur allar þær sem hann hafði fyrr haft þá er jarlar réðu landi.

Knútur konungur gaf Einari stórar gjafir og batt hann í kærleikum miklum við sig, hét því að Einar skyldi vera mestur og göfgastur ótiginna manna í Noregi meðan hans vald stæði yfir landi. En það lét hann fylgja að honum þótti Einar best fallinn til að bera tignarnafn í Noregi ef eigi væri jarls við kostur eða sonur hans Eindriði fyrir ættar sakir hans. Þau heit virtust Einari mikils og hét þar í mót trúnaði sínum. Hófst þá af nýju höfðingskapur Einars.
