Þau tíðindi spurðust í Noreg að Knútur hinn ríki dró saman her óvígjan í Danmörku og það með að hann ætlaði að halda liði því öllu til Noregs og leggja þar land undir sig.

En er slíkt spurðist þá urðu Ólafi konungi mennirnir því verri tiltaks og fékk hann síðan lítið af bóndum. Hans menn töluðu oft um þetta sín í milli.

Þá kvað Sighvatur þetta:

Út býðr allvaldr sveitum
Englands, en vér fengum,
lítt sé eg lofðung óttast,
liðfæð og skip smærri.
Ráð eru ljót ef láta
landsmenn konung þenna,
lætr einurð fé firða
ferð, liðþrota verða.

Konungur átti hirðstefnur en stundum húsþing við lið sitt allt og spyr menn ráðs hvað þá sýnist tiltækilegast. "Þurfum vér ekki í að dyljast," segir hann, "að Knútur konungur mun koma að vitja vor í sumar og hefir hann her mikinn sem þér munuð spurt hafa en vér höfum lið lítið að svo búnu til móts við her hans en landsfólk er oss nú ekki trúlegt."

En ræðu konungs svöruðu menn misjafnt, þeir er hann orti orða á.

En hér er frá því sagt er Sighvatur segir:

Flýja getr, en frýju,
fjandr, leggr oss til handa,
verð eg fyr æðru orði,
allvalds en fé gjalda.
Hverr skal þegn, þó að þverri
þengils vina gengi,
upp hvalfra svik, sjalfan
sik lengst hafa miklu.
