Nú er Ólafur konungur kom til Túnsbergs þá gerði hann menn í
allar sýslur og krafði konungur sér liðs og leiðangurs.
Skipakostur hans var þá lítill. Voru þá engi skip nema
búandaför. En lið dróst vel til hans þar úr héruðum en fátt
kom um langan veg og fannst það brátt að landsfólkið mundi þá
vera snúið frá einurðinni við konung.
Ólafur konungur gerði lið sitt austur á Gautland, sendi þá
eftir skipum sínum og þeim varnaði er þeir létu eftir um
haustið. En ferð þeirra manna varð sein því að þá varð eigi
betra en um haustið að fara í gegnum Danmörk því að Knútur
konungur hafði her úti um vorið um allt Danaveldi og hafði
eigi færra en tólf hundruð skipa.
